In everyday life countless unseen details are often the only difference between okay and an excellent result. I have respect for those individuals who make sacrifices and commit to become all they can be but so many of us go through life not getting close to our greatest potential. How many people do you know live a life of unrealized dreams? Maybe it’s because they choose not to focus on the best on them, maybe it’s because they are afraid to take risks? Think about what gives your life meaning; is it the things that are given to you? Or is it what you achieve? When we take risks, when we take on challenges it is then that we discover our true potential, we achieve things that we didn’t even think that we could.
Each of us is given unique natural talents, and we owe it to the world and to ourselves to maximize these talents in our life. Whether you are a leader or individual contributor, whether you work in IT, engineering or the healthcare field, it doesn’t matter. Your goal should be to learn all you can and make the most of these God-given talents that are natural and unique to you. So what do we mean by “talent?”
Raw Talent = The naturally recurring pattern of thought, feeling or behavior that can be productively applied.
Have you ever wondered why you make certain choices? Why you do what you do? Why you like certain things? Why you are better at some things than others? Most of the answers can be related to your raw natural talent and most of us don’t give these natural talents a second conscious thought once in adulthood. Talents are your unique “Maximizer” but just knowing your talents alone will not make a difference, it takes persistence and focus to turn your unique talents into action, focused action for results. Here are 5 Clues to Talent:
1) Yearning: Think of this as the pull or attraction to one activity rather than another. A leader might learn their team’s yearnings by asking, “What do you know you can do well, but haven’t yet done?” or, “If you had an entire week of your calendar open up and couldn’t work on previous commitments, what would you spend your time doing?”
2) Satisfaction: It is rare to find pleasure in places we don’t also find strength. It is important to pay attention to individualized intrinsic motivation, the activities we genuinely enjoy. At Churchill as coaches we may ask, “What sorts of activities do you finish and think, ‘I can’t wait to do that again’?”
3) Rapid Learning: Some patterns are so ingrained in our DNA that they open pathways of understanding we wouldn’t otherwise experience. To shed light on these pathways, ask about a person’s learning. “What have you done well that you didn’t need explained?”
4) Glimpses of Excellence: Success is a compilation of moments, and it takes a trained eye to notice these moments in everyday life. Listen to these experts, your coaches, teachers, or children. Help others weave a story from these moments by asking, “What have other people told you you’re great at doing?”
5) Total Performance Excellence: The Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls it “Flow,” and describes the optimal state of intrinsic motivation. Simple ask, “What are you doing when time seems to disappear?”
It is tough to identify and clearly articulate your raw talents, but be assured that when you do they can be harnessed and purposefully applied to become strengths to accelerate your performance. By understanding our talents, then investing in them we create our strengths.
Strength = Ability to consistently produce a positive outcome through near-perfect performance in a specific task.
The reality is that we cannot be anything we want to be, but we can be a lot more of who we are. No one achieves an excellent result or an excellent life doing just what needs to get done, it is by going above and beyond the required that takes people to the higher level. It is easier and faster for us to go above and beyond in those areas where we feel strong.
